Advice on Company Health
Our advice on company health can help you in a number of areas including:
Legislation at work affecting employees' health such as the Disability Discrimination Act(DDA),
Health & Safety
at Work Act etc.
See legislation page
There is so much legislation nowadays when you employ people, and it is difficult for the employer to keep up to date with current legislation. This is where we can help you to ensure that you comply with current law relevant to employees' health in the workplace.
Does your company have policies and procedures for:
- First Aid in the workplace
- Absence management
- Alcohol abuse
- Substance abuse
- Drivers health assessments
- Health surveillance e.g. Hearing test for employees exposed to noise in the workplace
- Pre-employment
- Rehabilitation to work etc.
We can give advice on development or review of these policies.
Do you have a policy for managing sickness absence, and procedures to ensure the policy is carried out?
- Are your managers trained in how to carry out the policy and procedures?
- Do they know when, why and how to refer employees to occupational health?
- Do you gather information on the types of sickness absence (in which departments, which jobs) and what health conditions are particular problems in your workplace?
- Do you know how to interpret the information, investigate it further, and put control methods into place?
- Do you have measures in place to support employees in their return to work following absence?
We can provide advice on these issues.
We can set up small group work for HR and managers using
PowerPoint presentation and question and answer sessions. Some examples
include:
- On the Disability Discrimination Act relating to employment & health
- Who to refer to Occupational Health
- What questions to ask the OH doctor/nurse
- The role of the OH doctor/nurse in sickness absence management
- Ethics and confidentiality in OH
- Consulting with employees' GP and hospital specialist
- Assessments for retiral on ill health grounds.
Workplace assessments can be undertaken to evaluate workplace health hazards and to advise on measures required to minimise or control them. These assessments can be carried out for an individual employee or within general workplace areas.
A workplace assessment can
- Identify the need for any specific health surveillance to be carried out e.g. hearing tests
- Identify the need for and provision of a training and awareness programme to be set up for employees e.g. skin care
- Assist in the development of a rehabilitation plan for an employee returning to work after absence.
Health checks can be carried out by someone properly trained by an occupational health nurse, who has been involved in carrying out health surveillance at your premises. The employer appoints the trained person/persons (who is known in the law as the ‘responsible person’). It’s unacceptable to appoint someone to carry out the checks unless they are trained to know what to look for, how to record and keep the results and what they should do if they suspect a problem e.g. contact their ccupational health provider.
We can provide the necessary training to allow the 'responsible person' to carry out the routine checks for
- Health surveillance at work
- Fitness for safety critical work
- Referring employees for health assessment
- Sickness absence management – health assessment
Display Screen Equipment (DSE) assessments
To ensure your business complies with the Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992 employers must take all reasonable precautions to ensure the health and safety of employees using Display Screen Equipment.
We can assist in the assessment of an employee`s workstation identifying any health risks and giving advice and recommendations for improving workstation layout, seating and posture as well as general ergonomic awareness.
Risk assessment may identify the need for your employees to be vaccinated against certain diseases. This is generally for employees working with biological hazards or traveling abroad on business.
We are able to provide an immunisation service as well as comprehensive travel advice to employees undertaking business travel.
A programme of Influenza vaccinations can also be provided to employees.
Employee communication and consultation is important in any business. Whatever the type of organisation people need to talk. We can assist you in attending meetings with management and employee representatives, safety representatives or recognised trade unions to provide information and support regarding the introduction of, or changes in dealing with health issues in the workplace e .g. setting up a health surveillance programme or reviewing an attendance management system.
